What is a Content Management System?

A Content Management System (CMS) for a website is a written web application that allows the owners or administrators of a website to manage the website content. Website content can include page text, photographs, links and videos. The CMS administrators do not need to be technically trained, install or learn any new software. The system is designed so that administrators can easily edit pages, upload photos and change content without interacting with any code.

The CMS administrator logs onto the admin area of the website and is presented with a user interface. They can select then what part of the website they would like to manage.
